CACI is looking for a Space Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer to work with NASA Johnson Space Center to design the next generation of humanoid robots. We are looking for a mechanical engineer with experience designing robotic actuators to join the Valkyrie humanoid robot team in NASA’s Robotic Systems Technology Branch. Building on the success of the existing Valkyrie and Robonaut 2 humanoid robots, this design team is tasked with advancing our ability to project a remote human presence and dexterous manipulation capability into challenging, dangerous, and distant environments both in space and here on earth.
This position will contribute directly to the design of the next NASA humanoid robot with an emphasis on designing, building, and testing novel high-performance electric actuators, integrated robot manipulators, and humanoid robot hands. New designs will be supported by the engineer from conception, analysis, and manufacturing, through to operational test and deployment.

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident for access to USG Facilities.
B.S. in Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, or related disciplines required plus a minimum 2-year experience in full-time mechanical design.
Experience designing robotic mechanisms and electromechanical actuators (including brushless motor design/selection/sizing, position and torque sensing, gear train design, and performance analysis).
Experience in all phases of the engineering design process (including concept brainstorming, requirements definition, prototyping, detailed design, analysis, manufacturing, assembly, and validation).
Expert CAD user (with a preference toward PTC Creo).
Familiarity with finite element analysis.
Familiarity with basic design for manufacturing principles
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers designing and building world-class, field-ready humanoid robots.
Flexible, open to new challenges in a dynamic environment, and possess strong technical expertise combined with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities with little supervision.
Highly responsible, team-oriented individual with strong work ethic.
Highly developed coordination and organization skills.
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, and 5+ years of full-time design experience (preferred).
Specialized experience designing humanoid robots, legged robots, high-performance robotic manipulators, and/or dexterous robot hands (preferred).
Experience designing series elastic actuators and other torque sensing systems (preferred).
Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g., additive manufacturing) and designing with composites (e.g., carbon fiber) (preferred).
Current knowledge of state-of-the-art academic and industrial robotic arms, actuators, and end-effectors (preferred).
Familiarity with motor drive electronics.
Experienced in electronics packaging, heat sink design, and cable routing (preferred).
A successful track record of fielding custom electromechanical systems in an operational setting.
Familiarity with ROS, the Linux operating system, and programming in C/C++ and Python.
Familiarity with dynamic simulation, particularly as it applies to generating robot design requirements (e.g., torque, speed, range of motion, etc.).
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
M.S. in Electrical Engineering with focus on power and / or battery systems.
Hands on experience in the design, build, and test of robot hardware
Successful track record of fielding custom electrical systems in an operational setting
Familiarity with the Linux operating system and programming in C/C++ and Python
Experience in the hardware design of embedded systems (microcontrollers, FPGAs, sensor interfaces, I2C/SPI buses, UARTS, etc.)
